A Future Worth Protecting: The Azores and Their Ocean

Some of the most important journeys begin with a willingness to look more closely.

Around the Azores, an island chain far out in the Atlantic, scientists have spent decades studying deep-sea habitats, marine life, and the ecosystems that make these waters remarkable. That knowledge helped build the case for a major commitment: in 2024, the region established a marine park covering 287,000 square kilometers—the largest marine protected area in the North Atlantic.

The protected area has two levels of protection. Half is fully protected, while the other half is highly protected. The designation is a significant step, but protecting the ocean takes more than drawing boundaries on a map. It takes continued research, thoughtful management, monitoring, and the participation of people whose lives and livelihoods are connected to the sea.

A new research vessel, the Azores Ocean, represents another part of that ongoing work. It will give scientists new ways to explore the Atlantic and learn more about the life beneath its surface. The vessel’s value lies not only in its technology, but in the questions, it can help people ask—and the discoveries those questions may make possible.

In her Reuters perspective, oceanographer Sylvia Earle points to the Azores as an example of what can happen when scientific understanding meets the determination to act. The region’s story is a reminder that care for the natural world is built over time: through curiosity, evidence, cooperation, and decisions made with the future in mind.

The ocean is vast, but it is not beyond our care. One region’s commitment can help others imagine what is possible—and choose a path worth protecting.
